Doctoral School Presentation

The ED EEA in brief

  • Between 200 and 250 doctoral students
  • More than 130 HDR (Habilitation to Supervise Research)
  • An average of 60 theses defended each year
  • 5 CNRS UMR laboratories
  • 3 host teams
  • More than 200 people working on advancing research in Electrical Engineering at the Lyon–Saint-Étienne site
Research topics

Thanks to the work of its eight laboratories, the ED EEA actively contributes to advances in electrical engineering research. Its multidisciplinary approach enables new synergies in the study of the following scientific fields:

  • Automatique
  • Electronique, Micro et Nanoélectronique, Optique et Laser
  • Génie Electrique
  • Ingénierie pour le vivant
  • Traitement du signal et de l’image

For more details on the research topics covered by the EEA doctoral school, please consult the directory of our research teams.

The EEA doctoral school brings together a large number of laboratories and researchers in Lyon and Saint-Etienne working in electrical engineering, a multidisciplinary field of engineering sciences and information and communication sciences and technologies covering information processing in systems and electrical energy management. Its goal is to offer its doctoral students high-quality training in and through research and to help them prepare for their professional future.

Drawing on the activities of eight research units, five of which are recognized by the CNRS, the ED EEA offers a particularly rich and conducive environment for research. It also benefits from the scientific resources and networks of the Ecole Centrale de Lyon, the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon, and the Université Claude Bernard de Lyon, to which it is affiliated, enabling it to provide doctoral supervision in the best possible conditions.

The doctoral students' work thus develops in a rich and diverse scientific environment of excellence, as the eight research units are involved in Investments for the Future in:

  • an Institute for Energy Transition,
  • a national infrastructure for biology and health,
  • 4 Laboratories of Excellence (LabEx), among the 12 at the University of Lyon,
  • 2 Facilities of Excellence (EquipEx), among the 6 at the University of Lyon,
  • a University Hospital Federation (FHU),
  • ...

while developing a significant set of experimental platforms.

The missions of the Doctoral School

The main missions of the EEA doctoral school are to offer doctoral students doctoral training and an environment conducive to advancing their research, as well as to help them define a solid career plan throughout their thesis.

To this end, the ED EEA ensures that:
  • A policy for selecting doctoral students based on explicit and public criteria is implemented.
  • The quality of supervision of doctoral students by research units and teams is ensured.
  • The thesis charter is respected and implemented. It ensures that doctoral students are able to prepare and defend their theses under the best possible conditions.
  • It organizes scientific and intellectual exchanges between doctoral students.
  • It offers doctoral students training that is useful for their research and career plans, as well as training necessary for acquiring a broader scientific culture.
  • It organizes monitoring and defines support for the professional integration of PhD graduates.
  • Providing a European and international perspective, in conjunction with foreign higher education institutions and research centers, in particular by promoting jointly supervised theses (doctorates awarded by two institutions, one of which is abroad, under joint supervision).
